Are you going to any of the October concerts?
Of course!
Maybe...
I am sitting out this round!

                Well hello there, all!

I trust you haven't missed me too terribly during my small break? I went a-traveling, furthering my collection of antique French wigs, and just couldn't find the time to update for you all. I hope that you'll understand and forgive me this transgression.

At any rate, I'm back now, and updating with all the fervor of a dervish. Oh heck, make it a whirling dervish!

                9/27/07

We’ve been doing a lot of “silly” German lately…Well, more or less since the get go, really. So, I thought we could actually do some textbook German phrases for a change.

So, look forward to the next Learn German update, when I’ll give you some actual conversational phrases in German! This week, though? Still more or less entirely silly.

However, before we get started with the ever-ridiculous lesson, I’d love to show you some of the mail I’ve been getting from you, the amazing readers of this site. I’m feeling particularly saucy today, so I’m actually going to answer them, as well. Woo!

                Name: Chrysoula
                Country: Greece
Comment: how do we say ''i love you'' in german?

                Hey, Chrysoula,

For one person to say “I love you”, it’s simply “Ich leibe Dich”. For more than one person, you would say “We love you!”, or “Wir Liebe Sie!”

Additionally, you could say “I’m in love!”, “Ich bin verliebt!” Or “I can’t live without you”, “Ohne dich kann ich nicht leben.” I hope that helps!

                Name: Nirny
                Country: Italy
Comment: Eheheheh, funny, really!!^_^ Just one thing..."wo sind eure hande?" (I know I forgot the umlaut, who cares!?!) means "where are your hands?" but it's not 2nd person singular, it's 2nd person plural..^_^ even if there's no difference in english, in german there is!!^_^ So maybe you can use this sentence if you go out with at least a couple of girls (or guys) at once!^_^ even more fun here!!^_^eheh kiss and keep up the good job!

                Ahoy there, Nirny!

You’re absolutely right, looking back over it now; I have no idea why I mistranslated. Oy! I try to make sure I’m as accurate as I can be, but these things do happen. Also, I tend to not be as strict, as this is a humor site and I honestly doubt there are people out there taking my word as gospel. At least, I hope there aren’t…

Thanks for the correction, and the kisses! (Just don’t tell my husband I’m accepting those.)

                Name: Tabitha
                Country: USA
Comment: Hmm…I am doing German lessons for my friend, if people want to actually…LEARN seriously studying, I can post links to the videos and work more on them :)

                Wellity, wellity, wellity, Tabitha!

Are you implying our studies here are not serious? Are, are you trying to say that people aren’t learning here? Well, I never! GOOD DAY TO YOU, SIR.

Silliness aside, I appreciate the gesture and offer, it’s kind of you. I’ve been thinking about video links for these lessons, actually, something to help with the pronunciations. I just wasn’t sure if there would be an interest in it.

So, folks, let me know! Do you want to hear someone pronouncing some of these phrases for you? Helping with the actual out loud parts of knowing German? Leave a comment and tell me what you think!

Now, since that ate up a bit of room, this is just going to be a short lesson. And the lesson theme?

                Netspeak in German!

For instance, most English Speakers use LOL, or “Laugh Out Loud”. Obviously, these words are not the same in German. Instead, you would use LRA, or “Lachen Raus Auffällig.” See where I’m going now?

Another is TTYL, or “Talk To You Later”. In German, this becomes SIS, or “Spreche Ihnen Später."

GTG, or “Got To Go”? This becomes MF, or “Muß Fahren.”

IMHO, or “In My Honest Opinion” is a new term, but getting pretty widely used anymore. So, in German, you’d say HMDE, or “Herein Meine Dafürhalten Ehrlich.”

See? Not all that hard once you get the ball rolling! Okay, only time for one more. BFF, “Best Friend Forever”? In German, you’d say A, or “Andreas.”

So, that’s it for this week, cats and kittens! I hope you enjoyed it, and don’t forget to leave a comment, question or suggestion if you have one!
